Group Scout Leader

Group Scout Leader : Sam Elliott

The role of the GSL is to manage and support the Scout Group and it's Leaders to ensure it runs effectively and that Scouting within the Group develops in accordance with the rules and policies of the Scout Association.

As GSL's we have been appointed by and are responsible to our District Commissioner and are part of the District Management Team.

As Group Scout Leader I will...

  • develop good working relationships based on trust and the Scout values with parents, adults in the Group and with others in Scouting
  • manage and support the adults in our Group, including allocating tasks and reviewing their progress
  • support adults in our Group to develop by completing formal training, learning on the job and trying out new skills
  • continue to build upon our great team spirit and support development of our team as a whole
  • address any conflicts as they occur and reduce the likelihood of it happening again
  • run effective Leader meetings and participate fully in the Group Executive Committee and District meetings
  • ensure that adults in the Group perform to agreed standards and if serious problems occur we will use correct procedures are followed in consultation with the District Commissioner
  • carry out effective reviews and re-assign or retire people if necessary
  • build and maintain our relationships with other relevant organisations in our local area. We have built up a great relationship with Blandford Town Council, and have supported them at many of their events. We have had a Mayors Scout elected for 3 years running, they support the Mayor in many of their public duties. Sam is also a representative for the Scout Group on the Blandford Yuletide Committee and actively takes part in the organisation of this annual event.
  • ensure that suitable adults are recruited to appropriate roles in the Group
  • work with our team to develop a Group Plan (see above) to identify areas that need improvement. These will be prioritised and actioned by members of the team best placed to complete the task(s). We will monitor these projects/tasks until completion
  • be working with the Group Executive committee to manage budgets and ensure adequate income to deliver Scouting
  • ensure that the Group's meeting place and equipment is safe and fit for use
  • ensure all adults in the Group have the right information to do their role
  • compile a resource list for Leaders with details of; grants list from local organisations, other Group's equipment, activity centres, online tools, programme planning tool, brand centre, TSA website and OSM. We will also add details of any skills and talents of our team, parents of youth members and volunteers at District and County

Key Policies...

Ourselves and all adult volunteers implement the policies of the association at all times: Religious, Equal opportunities, Safety, Vetting, Child protection, Anti-bullying, Development, Privacy and data protection
